israel!

I finally got around to posting some of my pictures from Israel. I got to participate on a (free!) one week trip with 10 of my co-workers. We saw 2 or 3 of the programs we are funding, but mostly toured the country. Unfortunatly my digital camera broke the day I left for Israel ... I took these on a friend's I borrowed once I met up with him in Jerusalem. We started in the north of the country (Nof Ginosaur on the sea of galiee, tzfat, rafting on the jordan river, a few other destinations along the northern "finger" of the country), then went down to Tel Aviv on the coast, Jerusalem, the Dead Sea and Masada ruins, and finally met some locals in our parter city of Beit Shemesh.

The real slim shady

So if I have to pick one of America's numerous super-corporations to be Afraid Of for their Big Brother Tactics, who should it be?

10 years ago I would have answered: America Online is the DEVIL, Dad!! For providing such horribly crappy services among other things I still hate them for on general principle. But thats another story.

5 years ago I would have answered: That's right Tom, MICROSOFT IS THE ANTI-CHRIST! For unethicial business practices and squashing the free & open source movement as best they can.

From now on I will answer: MY LOCAL PHONE COMPANY!

That's right folks. They own the lines. They are a monopoly and pretty much do whatever the hell they can get away with. I've been trying to speak to someone about a bill for a month -- every time I call I get a recording and then my call is disconnected.

AND YESTERDAY ONE OF THEIR DAMN CONTRACTORS UNPLUGGED OUR COMCAST TV/INTERNET CABLE FROM THE UTILITY POLE!!

Our neighbor was getting some Verizon internet service installed all day. I got home at 5 and the cable AND internet were out. When the repair tech came today he said the cable had been disconnected on the utility pole.

...

Those cables don't just disconnect themselves people.

Join me in giving a hearty "FUCK YOU!" and the finger to the next verizon technician you see.

First post ++

I've been a little busy with the boxes recently. Finally got internet (ICS) working on both laptop and gemstone, thanks to some stuff I remembered my boss doing once like three months agao.

Also installed a new linux distro - Fedora Core 6, just came out last week. At least it doesn't take 3.5 hours to install this time. Seems nice so far.

Now i can get on with configuring apache.

box down box down

looks like my windows box might be down for awhile -- it was randomly shutting down during stree tests for an online MMO i've been beta testing, but then started doing it when i booted windows too. And FYI windows repair installations only work if your cd is not scratched :(

No internet to gemstone till this gets fixed or I move it upstairs ....

reclaiming the past

so it looks like I may be starting up a side project with some friends again -- a much smaller game project this time. I think we all learned our lesson!

Step 1? Get your linux server working again! All those (free) builtin tools for webpage hosting, database engines, and file sharing are quite handy =)

I just completed the first small step (ok the second -- I can boot the machine using White Box Enterprise Linux now) -- configuring Internet Connection Sharing on my main (xp) desktop.

Basically I'm too lazy to drag the linux box (gemstone) upstairs to sit next to the router, so I am plugging it into the unused onboard nic on my PC, and telling my PC its ok to let gemstone pass through for an internet connection. Perhaps not as reliable, but fine for now when I'm still setting the machine up.

onward!

Unfucking believable.

Maybe I'll move and take my tax dollars somehwere where I know I'll actually get the representation I'm entitled to. How can they turn away people who want to vote?!?!

A sad sad day

"Do to insufficient response times over the past few weekends; I have put this list together. I will be sending it to our managing directors for their use in case of emergency. Hopefully, this will clear up the diffusion of responsibility we are currently experiencing when approached with weekend trouble." -- boss man

Today was the last day we officially had NO on-call policy at work. It was nice while it lasted.

Hopefully we won't see too much volume. :/

The Turquoise Lament (A Travis McGee Novel).

"Ever since I had dumped her into a drainage canal to avoid hitting a fleet-footed girl in the night, I had been upgrading all the hidden parts. Now she had the big engine lifted out of a 1972 Mark IV Continential that was totaled. Rebuilding the engine with both stock and custom power assists had meant a new gear train and a new rear end."

For once I cannot blame the phone company

I just got off work. We were moving servers and networking hardware from one location to another. Why weren't we done three hours ago you ask? Here's why: The front end of our router has 2 ports labeled Gi 0 and Gi 1. Our switch (which plugs into the router) has ports labeld Gi 1 and Gi 2.

...

Damn you Cisco.

Wheeee!

There's only one thing better than having a bar in walking distance from your house ... and thats when your friends move around the corner and throw a kegger!!

Good times good times. Saw some old friends I had not seen in awhile. There were also lots of random people I didnt really know but it was still good.

Hopefully this week will be less crazy than last. Hopefully that stupid bug with the website project Im working on will be fixed easily. Hopefully I will get more sleep this week.

Whose house? PHILS HOUSE!

This was from last night. silly LJ

So a bunch of the agencies we give IT support to are moving into a single building nearby. Yeay!! I took a trip over there with a co-worker to scope it out and tone out some analog lines - pretty routine stuff. We were checking out the server room which is totally awsome - full climate controll / ac, all cables and patch panels neatly labeled, nice cable management, glass doors that only open with the card (spiffy). Best of all we found stackloads of servers and equipment (server hard drives, $800 ea x10)!!! How awsome is that? I think it was thrown in as part of the deal. Here's a shot of my coworker dwarfed by mounds of servers and parts. Oh the second awsome part is that all of these agencies are my responsibility so I will be moving into the hot new digs 2-3 days / week starting the end of this month!!
